Eye tracking study: to attract your visitors attention and boost sales
In a recent eye tracking study, made by Jacob Nielsen about web Accessibility and user experience, it was found that users main reading behaviour is fairly consistent across many different web sites and tasks.
The dominant reading pattern looks somewhat like the letter ‘F’:
- Users first read in a horizontal movement, usually across the upper part of the content area (The initial element forms the F top bar)
- Next, the user moves down the page a bit and the read across in a second horizontal movement that typically covers a shorter area (The second element forms the F bar)
- Finally users scan the content’s left side in a vertical movement (The vertical third bar of the F)
Obviously there are some differences, but only a deep knowledge of eye scanning patterns can lead to an enhanced user experience where the user it taken by hand and brought to compete the tasks that the web site is designed for.
